Report: LeBron James Group in “Advanced Talks” to Buy Pittsburgh Penguins from NHL
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James could become part owner of an NHL franchise in the near future.
The Fenway Sports Group, of which James is a partner, is said to be in “advanced talks” to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins from the NHL. Fenway Sports Group also owns the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC, a Premier League football team.
“Fenway Sports Group LLC, the holding company that owns the Boston Red Sox, is in advanced talks to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, according to people familiar with the matter,” he added. the Wall Street newspaperby Cara Lombardo and Laine Higgins wrote.
“A deal could be finalized later this week, assuming the talks don’t collapse,” the people said. The terms discussed could not be learned.
James, 36, has embarked on incredible adventures off the field during his NBA career, and he could add to that list of accomplishments if Fenway Sports Group actually bought the Penguins.
Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle have owned the Penguins since 1999. The team won three Stanley Cups during that time and currently have the longest active playoff streak in the NHL at 15 consecutive years.
While this takes place off the field, James is focused on leading the Lakers to an NBA title in the 2021-22 season.
This season, James has only appeared in six games, but he’s playing at an MVP level. The four-time champion averages 24.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game while shooting 46.7% from the field and 34.7% from beyond the arc.
